Floods hit some areas in Indonesia such as Bogor and Bandung. It brought garbage to the road and residents.
Indonesia officially entered the rainy season in October. With the rain, worry looms too. For years, floods hit some areas impacted by heavy rainfall. As a result, material losses and fatalities could not be avoided.
Heavy rainfall increases water discharge in rivers and waterways. Due to rampant development, lack of water-absorption area and garbage blockage in waterways cause floods. In recent times, floods have shocked communities by returning the waste they throw into the environment. For example, floods that occurred in Bogor and Bandung also brought garbage to residential areas.
Floods and Plastic Waste Bogor
A viral video showed a lot of plastic bags that wrapped garbage drifting away during a flood. This incident occurred in Cikaret Village, South Bogor District, Bogor City. The flood that occurred on Thursday, November 3, 2022, brought the garbage from the Temporary Disposal Site (Indonesia: Tempat Pengumpulan Sementara / TPS). As a result, a lot of garbage was scattered around people’s homes after the flood receded.
After the flood receded, the local government encouraged the residents to collect the waste. They helped each other to clean the drain to prevent flooding. Next, the local government planned to construct a permanent waste processing center for the Bogor City Environment Agency. This is their solution to mitigate floods.
Bandung Hit by Garbage Flood
The capital city of West Java was also hit by flood. Flooding occurred in Gedebage on Monday, October 3rd, 2022. The flood also floated garbage to the main road. Organic and inorganic waste such as plastic were seen floating around 100m.
The local government stated that the flood problem is very complex. It is influenced by natural aspects such as heavy rainfall and human contribution. This area does not have proper flood mitigation infrastructure. Moreover, people usually litter the drain and rivers. It worsens the flood.
Stop Waste Pollution to Prevent Flood
Reflecting on our relationship with nature, we have degraded the environment by littering and not being mindful about the waste we produce. Finally, nature seeks revenge with the flood and waste that drown the roads and our house. So, would you keep this vicious cycle?
Let’s go easy on earth! Learn how to be responsible with our waste. This is our responsibility to make sure our waste ends up in the right place. It will be better if we can reduce waste, by trying to reduce using single-use plastic, finishing your food, and reusing your proper second-hand items.
Greeneration Foundation keeps encouraging people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle by paying attention to people’s consumption and production patterns. The Driving Refill Solution (DRS) program carries our mission to ask people to reduce the use of single-use plastics. This program intervenes Jakarta residents who are vulnerable to flooding due to poor waste management systems and high rainfall.
